چکیده

The Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA), functioning as a high-resolution radiometer, has observed several appearances of the Martian residual ice caps. We examine these data to quantify both seasonal behavior and interannual differences. The northern residual cap (NRC) was found to be mostly stable with the exception of one, previously identified, region of strong variability. Interannual change in the extent of the NRC appears to be small and reversible on timescales of 1 or 2 years. The NRC has an elaborate seasonal evolution of albedo. Annuli of fine-grained CO2 and water frost, which track the inner and outer edges of the seasonal CO2 cap, cause large temporary brightenings. The NRC albedo is stable from just after solstice to Ls 1501, after which albedo decreases steadily. This late-summer darkening can be explained by shadowing within the rough topography of the NRC, leading to a lower limit on topographic relief of 80 cm. The southern residual cap (SRC) appears stable in extent. As has been previously discovered, its seasonal frost albedo behavior appears to be correlated with insolation. However, residual CO2 appears not to share this characteristic; we use this behavioral difference to infer net deposition of CO2 ice on the SRC during 1 out of 3 years. Uncharacteristically, the SRC abruptly darkens at Ls 3201 in 1 Martian year (year beginning April 2002). Circumstantial evidence suggests atmospheric scattering by dust is responsible. The 2001 global dust-storm appears, either, to have had no effect on the polar cap albedos, or, resulted in slightly brighter ice deposits. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

On the Mystery of the Perennial Carbon Dioxide Cap at the South Pole of Mars

SOUTH POLE OF MARS. Alejandro Soto, Xin Guo, and Mark I. Richardson, Caltech, M/C 150-21, Pasadena, CA 91125. [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Introduction: A perennial CO2 ice cap has long been observed near the south pole of Mars. The retention of a CO2 ice cap results from the surface energy balance of the latent heat, solar radiation, surface emission, and subsurfa...

Investigation of the nature and stability of the Martian seasonal water cycle with a general circulation model

[1] We describe the first use of a general circulation model to study the Martian water cycle. Water is treated as a passive tracer, except for ice-albedo coupling. The model is used to assess which mechanisms and water reservoirs are critical to the seasonal evolution of water and specifically the attainment of an interannually repeatable steady state. The model comes to a reasonable steady st...

Retreat of the North Seasonal Cap of Mars Observed by Omega and Crism

Introduction: Seasonal caps play an important role for surface-atmosphere interactions on Mars, as they trap up to 25% of the atmosphere during winter. While seasonal caps are mainly constituted of CO2 ice, H2O ice and dust play an important role in their evolution. Spectral imaging observations in the near infrared provide unambiguous information on the composition of the seasonal caps as CO2 ...

Crater Population and Resurfacing at the Martian North Pole

Introduction: The Martian north polar residual cap (NRC) lies on top of the north polar layered deposits (NPLD). The NRC is about 1m thick and composed primarily of large-grained, dust-poor water ice [1]. The mass balance of the polar cap is uncertain. Long-term monitoring reveals small reversible changes in its extent on an interannual basis [2]. Images with a pixel scale of up to 0.25 m/pixel...

Decadal to seasonal variability of Arctic sea ice albedo

[1] A controlling factor in the seasonal and climatological evolution of the sea ice cover is its albedo a. Here we analyze Arctic data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Polar Pathfinder and assess the seasonality and variability of broadband albedo from a 23 year daily record. We produce a histogram of daily albedo over ice covered regions in which the principal albedo ...
